It seems 5-HTP is everywhere and very popular. It is sold as a single ingredient tablet, or as an added ingredient in a specialized formula. Here at RMB Naturals we have included it in our Sleep Formula, and our Mood Formula. Why have we done that? Read on…
Also known as 5-hydroxy-tryptophan, 5-HTP is a neurotransmitter created in the body, which the body uses as a serotonin regulator in the brain and central nervous system. It is also produced commercially from the seeds of an African plant (Griffonia simplicifolia).
Serotonin is a “feel good” neurotransmitter which is responsible for mood, hunger, and sleep. Studies have shown that 5-HTP works by increasing the amount of serotonin produced in the brain. According to Gastpar and Wakelin (1998), 5-HTP is a known precursor to serotonin which has been proven in many studies. Serotonin levels are supposed to have a direct effect on a persons mood. In fact antidepressant drugs approved by the FDA, such as Prozac, are said to work by increasing the amount of serotonin available to the brain.
The web sites I reviewed stated, a supplement of 5-HTP helps to regulate mood, helps treat anxiety, and aids in weight loss by decreasing appitite. It is long known that there is a relationship between mood and weight, 5-HTP’s effect on mood may help suport weight loss. They also stated that 5-HTP helps with insomnia and lowers the risk of heart disease. The risk of heart disease is supposed to be lowered as a result of lower anxiety levels and a more peaceful state of mind. Results have been positive in easing the symptoms of fibromyalgia. Also, there are encouraging studies on improving the symptoms of depression.
There are many positives about adding 5-HTP to your life with minimal side effects. Most people who add 50 to 100 mg daily, exerience real benefits to their mood and sleep patterns. Our formulas include pure, natural 5-HTP in just the right amount for optimum benefits that you will appreciate soon after beginning to take them each day.
5-HTP, or supplements containing 5-HTP should not be taken by those who take medications for depression (Antidepressant drugs), these will interact with 5-HTP in a negative way.
