There are many reasons for periodically doing a natural detox and cleanse. For many it is a way to reset their body and increase energy. For others it’s a good way to jump-start a weight loss program by cleaning house so to speak.

Our world is filled with toxins. Those of us who do our best to avoid most of them are unable to do so completely, so cleansing our body becomes necessary for optimum health. Our bodies are able to process healthy nutrients much more efficiently with a clean system. More efficient use of nutrients in turn gives much more natural energy throughout the day. Removing toxins from our system is known to to help decrease the risk of some cancers.

RMB Naturals has recently released our Advanced Natural Detox and Cleanse Formula. I’d like to review for you the ingredients, what they do, and why we included them in the formula.

Senna Leaf is the first ingredient; it is an herb and has been used for centuries as a natural laxative. It grows most commonly in China and India. Senna leaf stimulates the muscles of the colon to push fecal matter through, it also helps the colon absorb water to soften stool. Active compounds in the senna plant, called sennosides, may be responsible for its laxative effect. Generally speaking, a bowel movement can be expected in 6 to 10 hours after taking senna.

Cascara sagrada also known as the California buckhorn tree, grows on the Pacific coast of the US and parts of South America. Historically, it was used by Native Americans to treat constipation, digestive problems, joint and muscle pain, gonorrhea, gallstones, and dysentery just to name a few. Cascara sagrada is a stimulant laxative. It works by causing muscle contractions in the intestines, which move stool through the bowels similar to senna leaf. The bark contains chemicals called anthraquinones that give it its color and its laxative effect. These chemicals react with bacteria in the intestines to stimulate the bowels. You are probably thinking we are a little heavy on the laxatives and you would be correct! Our body stores waste in the small and large intestines, so detox and cleansing begins there.

Psyllium Husk powder is a form of fiber made from the Plantago ovata plant, specifically from the husks of the plant’s seed. It sometimes goes by the name ispaghula. It is a bulk-forming laxative, which means it soaks up water in your gut and makes bowel movements much easier. While it helps promote regularity, it doesn’t promote gas. It can be used as a one-off to ease constipation, adding psyllium to your diet can help promote regularity and overall digestive health.

Flax seed powder is a natural, and very good source of fiber. Most Americans are lacking fiber in their diets. Second, flax is a plant source of omega-3. Once again, most Americans are short on their omega-3 fatty acids. These essential fatty acids (“essential” meaning they must be consumed because our bodies don’t make them) play an important role in the anti-inflammatory system of our body. Flax contains the shorter chain omega-3 called ALA (alpha-linolenic acid). Third, flax contains lignans which reduce the risk of breast cancer in women and prostate cancer in men. The lignans alter the way your body metabolizes estrogen into safer forms. So in addition to adding bulk fiber to the cleanse supplement, you see there are additional benefits as well.

Aloe vera gel powder helps in the proper functioning of the digestive system. The adaptogenic properties of this plant are beneficial for proper digestive function. It ensures better nutrient absorption and also eliminates harmful elements through smooth excretion. A healthy digestive process positively affects your thoughts and actions,  promoting overall health.  Aloe Vera eases irritable  bowel syndrome symptoms and keeps constipation, piles and other gastrointestinal conditions from damaging your system. Aloe Vera has  natural detoxifying properties that effectively cleanse the digestive system and the circulatory system. As the absorption level of nutrients increase our bodies begin to operate much more efficiently.

Lactobacillus acidophilus is the most researched and proven probiotic known to scientists. Research in recent decades has confirmed that supplementing with acidophilus can  help our digestion and also treat diarrhea, irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), leaky gut syndrome, reduces lactose intolerance and increases our absorption of calcium, B vitamins and can even improve appetite. Acidophilus bacteria also help fight allergies and enemy bacteria.

Licorice root has a well-documented reputation for healing ulcers. It can lower stomach acid levels, relieve heartburn and indigestion and acts as a mild laxative. It has been used for inflammation and spasm in the digestive tract, licorice root has it’s most beneficial action on the liver through increasing bile flow and lowering cholesterol levels.  The increased bile flow gives a strong cleansing action on the liver.

Medium chain triglycerides, MCTs are fatty acids that are naturally found in coconut and palm oil, and ghee (clarified butter). They are known for increasing energy, increasing mental clarity, assisting in weight loss, and healthy cholesterol levels.  They are easy to digest, and are burned as energy—so there is no where for them to go, and no place for you body to store them. Much healthier than other fats.

As with any cleanse, it is important to drink large amounts of water and eat fiber to move the toxins through the system quickly. This prevents toxins from being reabsorbed by the bowel. Before taking any new supplement, it is always a good idea to check with your health care provider.
